Webinar with Dave Tout, ACER
15th February, Time: 2:00pm – 3:30pm AEDT, $30
This presentation will look at some issues related to the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy, especially at the relationship between these two core skills. How does numeracy relate to literacy and vice versa? And where does language fit in, especially within numeracy? What are some of the key issues arising from this that impact on teaching literacy and especially numeracy?
Dave Tout is an experienced numeracy educator who is particularly interested in making mathematics relevant, interesting and fun for all students, especially those students who are disengaged from mathematics. He has worked in a range of teaching programs in schools, TAFE Institutes, community providers, university, AMES and industry. He has written a number of teaching, curriculum, assessment and professional development materials and resources, and has presented on a wide range of topics at numerous local, regional, national and international conferences and events. Over the past 10 years he has been involved in the development and writing of the numeracy components of the international Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS) and the recent follow-up survey, the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), and helped coordinate and manage the mathematical literacy component of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012, where Mathematical Literacy was the major domain assessed. He has also been responsible for overseeing the development of the numeracy domain of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).
